Window material
PVC is usually the most economical choice. Aluminium, due to raw material cost and more complex processing, tends to be more expensive - especially in thermally broken versions for residential use. Wood typically sits somewhere in between, depending on the species and finish.
The specific system and its parameters
Within a single material, prices also vary. A system with more chambers, a deeper profile and three seals (i.e. better thermal performance) will cost more than a basic version from the same manufacturer. This isn't a cosmetic difference - it translates into real differences in heating bills over the window's entire service life.
Dimensions and number of windows
The price of a single window rises with its surface area - a larger pane means more material and a heavier construction requiring sturdier hardware. When replacing multiple windows at once, suppliers often offer better terms than for a single order, so it's worth asking for an overall quote rather than a per-piece price.
Scope of work - windows only or with installation
As we wrote in "Windows only, or windows with installation?", installation is a separate cost item - it covers removing the old windows, finishing work, installing the new ones, adjustment, and often disposal of the old joinery. Extra elements such as interior and exterior sills, roller shutters or non-standard profile colours (other than white) also affect the final amount.

Extra costs it's easy to forget when budgeting
Beyond the price of the windows and installation, it's worth budgeting for: replacing interior and exterior sills (old ones rarely fit new dimensions), removal and disposal of the old windows (some companies include this in the service, some charge separately - always worth asking directly), any plaster touch-ups around the frame after removal and, for non-standard sizes or shapes (arches, trapezoids), a surcharge for custom production. A good quote should list these items separately rather than hiding them inside one lump "per window" figure.
