Window installation day goes faster and more smoothly if the home is properly prepared. Here's a practical checklist of things worth taking care of beforehand.
1. Clear space around the windows
Move furniture, curtains, blinds and pot plants within roughly 1.5-2 metres of the windows being replaced - both inside and outside (where possible). The installation crew needs free access from both sides.
2. Protect floors and belongings
Removing old windows and installing new ones generates dust and small debris. It's worth covering the floor with foil or old blankets within a few metres, and moving valuable or dust-sensitive items (electronics, artwork, books) to another room or covering them tightly.
3. Provide access to power and water
The installation crew uses power tools, so access to a socket near the work area is useful. Access to running water also makes cleaning up afterwards easier.
4. Plan a day without other pressing matters at home
Installing a single window usually takes 1 to 2 hours, so for multiple windows it's worth setting aside a whole day. It's also good to have an adult at home for the entire duration - not just for questions from the crew, but also because wall openings will be exposed for a while.
5. Think about pets
Window openings left exposed for a time, strangers in the house and tool noise are a significant stressor for pets - and sometimes a real escape risk. It's best to keep pets in a room the crew won't need to enter during installation, or, if possible, arrange for them to stay elsewhere that day.
6. Agree with the crew on what happens to the old windows
Ask in advance whether removal and disposal of the old joinery is included in the service or something you need to arrange yourself - this avoids misunderstandings on installation day.
What else is worth protecting on installation day
Besides moving furniture and taking down curtains, it's worth protecting the floor with sheeting or cardboard for about 1.5-2 metres from the window - that's the zone where construction dust and small bits of old installation foam most often land. If there's a rug in the room, roll it up or cover it. It also helps to plan power access near the window (power tools) and make sure there's space by the window to temporarily set down the old joinery before it's carried out.
